Michaela Walsh upgraded her bronze medal to at least silver with an historic and superb win over India’s Pinki Rani in the flyweight class at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this afternoon. The Belfast flyweight, who is ranked No. 14 in the World at bantam, beat the World No. 11 (at light-fly) on a majority 2-0 decision (38-38,40-36,39-37). Walsh used her height and reach advantage to good effect today and consistently peppered Rani, who holds a victory over India’s five-time AIBA World Elite champion Mary Kom, throughout the four rounds. Rani, whose tactics basically boiled down to getting inside Walsh’s guard and letting rip, also had her moments, but Walsh, who skilfully kept her opponent at bay with her raking jab, deservedly had her hand raised in victory to become to first woman to reach a Commonwealth boxing final. She’ll now meet England’s Nicola Adams, the current Olympic flyweight champion and AIBA World No.1, tomorrow. Adams reckons that Saturday’s final will be a classic. “It’s going to be a cracking fight, rumble in the jungle,” she said.
