In a statement issued today, Rep Bachmann said ” It is counterproductive for the people’s representatives to ignore the pro-democracy aspirations of a popular majority in Egypt rising up against a radical Islamist regime. We need to rally behind a rejection of Islamic Jihad, not behind a push to release murderers from Egyptian prisons.” “We need Congressional leaders who would side with civil societies, not Islamists” Reacting to Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s statement in favor of the Egyptian democratic revolution and against the Islamist regime of Mohammed Morsi, a number of Egyptian American NGOs, including Copts and secular democratic groups, said Bachmann understands the suffering of our people in the Middle East better than those who visit the Ikhwan and claim a popular revolution is a coup. Magdi Khalil, a spokesman for Coptic International Solidarity said “Congresswoman Bachmann and many lawmakers who spoke at our convention in Congress are great friends of the Christians of Egypt and of all Muslim moderates as well. As Americans from Egyptian descent we reject our Administration’s partnership with the Ikhwan, but we are shocked by statements made by Senator John McCain in favor of an Islamist regime that suppressed Egyptians and had links to Jihadists, including to those who attacked US diplomats in Benghazi.
