Michelle and I needed some time away, just hunting. No video - TopicsExpress

Michelle and I needed some time away, just hunting. No video cameras, no kids just us having a great time in a different county. I had a spot all picked out watching a big wheat field and Michelle was going to another one. The idea was to deer hunt, being in a different county meant we could both shoot a buck. We hadn’t been hunting long when I heard a shot, then 2 more! I had a good idea what she had done, PIGS! She said: she spotted a hog in a tree line about 375-400 yards away and made the stalk. When she got there she made the shot and the hog dropped. More scattered and took off for open country. She shot twice at one running nearly 400 yards away and thought she had missed. A hog laid down in the middle of field and she knew it had been hit. She had her spare bullets in her coat pocket, thing is she dumped her coat in pursuit because the bullets were clanking. She got nearly to the downed hog and it got up, so she shot it again, this time the hog got up and charged her! The problem was she now realized she was out of ammo! The hog was only a few yards away and Michelle sprinted back to where she had dropped her coat. She now reloaded and went back to finish off the hog. AS all of this was taking place I was about a mile away watching a young buck chase a doe. A nice 8 point entered the field about the time Michelle started shooting and he left. Shortly after several small bucks and another nice 8 point entered the field about 500 yards away. I was trying to decide whether or not he was worth me going after him, when another big buck entered the field .I decided he might be worth the trek to get a closer shot. I dropped off into the little creek behind me and covered better than a quarter of a mile of twisting and turning creek, at a steady run, in mud, to gain only 200 yards! When I came up out of the creek bed the deer were still a little better than 300 yards away, a shot I’m capable of taking, but rather a buck be closer for a better look before taking him. The bigger buck put the big 8 point out of the field in a heartbeat, so I decided to try to rattle him closer. There were still 7 bucks and several does in the field when I rattled. As soon as I started rattling the 8 came back into the field, he and 4 others headed my way fast! The problem I now had was that the 8 point and the 10 point were almost identical, running straight at me it was difficult to tell them apart. They were just about downwind of me now at 67 yards! I could now tell which one I wanted and he was facing me. I took the only shot I would likely get at this point, straight through the neck. BOOM he was down. A side note: over the last 21 years I’ve kept records and the December 13 has always been my most productive day to rattle in bucks. I didn’t realize it was the 13th until I was tagging him. We took pics and dressed Michelle’s hogs. By now it was plenty dark. I decide to check one more field for hogs before heading back to camp. I spotted about 15 hogs closed the distance and dropped one. A good day hunting indeed. Although this buck is not “THE” one, he is my highest scoring buck to date. will post more pics of buck in separate post.
