Michigan Cottage Food Law You too, can be a successful Farmers Market Vendor You love to bake, make pies, cook jams and jellies. Everyone in your family says, “You should have your own business!” If you live in Michigan, you can try your hand at it through a farmers market and the help of the Michigan Cottage Food Law. The Cottage Food Law, developed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development defines the rules and regulations under which farm markets produce these type products. Let’s check to see what is eligible per the Cottage Food Law. It is non-potentially hazardous food that does not require temperature control (like custard pies). Therefore bake good, cakes, fruit pies, cookies, breads, jams and Jellies, dry herbs and herb mixtures are all eligible as long as they are made in the home in which you reside . Non-eligible foods are anything that requires temperature control, meat and meat products, including fish, canned fruits, vegetables, including salsa and pickled products. And only Michigan residents can sell in Michigan. Wisconsin vendors may not sell goods covered by the Michigan Cottage Food Laws. With the exceptions Wisconsin vendors may sell whole dry herbs still on the stems, which is different from Michigan Cottage Food Law, dry herbs which are usually de- stemmed and bagged. You will need to make a label for each individual item that you are selling, and you will need it packaged in either a bag or box. Cookies can be sold by a dozen or a single packaged cookie. It is up to you on to select the quantity.
