Microsoft Calls for Data Sharing Agreement Between U.S. and EU Financial Times (01/21/15) Robinson, Duncan Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith says the U.S. and EU should agree to cooperate on providing law enforcement authorities with access to their own citizens data even when that data is stored in another country. Smith says U.S. technology companies would likely welcome such rules for cross-border cases as a way to balance privacy and law enforcement needs. The industry generally believes that there needs to be new rules [in] cross border [cases], says Smith. One of the points that resonates is the notion that a government would have a jurisdictional basis to reach the content of its own citizens, even when that data is stored in another country.
