Mid-Pacific Institute summer school 6th graders visited the East-West Center last Friday morning to learn about Japanese lacquerware. Activities included a talk and gallery walk-through by arts curator Michael Schuster, a video on lacquerware in Wajima, Japan, and a craft activity which illustrated the basic ideas of the maki-e lacquer decorating technique, using traditional Japanese symbols and the students own designs.This Arts Program activity was held in conjunction with the current gallery exhibition, Living Lacquer Traditions, which runs through September 7.
