Mid-South Great Steak Cook-off rocks at Southland Park! More than 3,800 guests were in attendance as Southland Park Gaming and Racing on Oct. 18 hosted its Mid-South Great Steak Cook-Off featuring rock bands REO Speedwagon and Loverboy. The event – held on the grounds of the Delaware North-owned-and-operated gaming venue -- has grown each year of existence. The 2014 version featured 85 steak-cooking entries from five different states, all competing for a share of $7,500 in prize money. Jeremy Sides and his cooking team took home the Grand Champion prize of $4,000 and the Guinness Book of World Records largest trophy, which towers above at more than 34 feet tall. REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million records during its stories career and has charted 13 Top 40 hits, including No. 1 hits, “Keep On Loving You” and “Cant Fight This Feeling.” Loverboy, a Canadian group, also accumulated numerous hits throughout the 1980s, including “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend,” which have become arena rock staples and are still heard on many classic rock stations. “We had so much fun organizing and executing the 2014 Mid-South Great Steak Cook-Off,” said Troy Keeping, president and general manager of Southland Park. “This event has grown in popularity each year, and were pleased that this years entertainment lineup truly resonated with so many mid-southerners.” The event also included a $1,500 beanbag-toss tournament and a $2,500 dart tournament during the day. Additional entertainment was provided by DSB, a popular Journey tribute band, and up-and-coming Nashville artist Brynn Marie.
