Middle East update( I really tried to avoid it, but theres not a dull moment here) - Gaza situation: - As rainy season arrives, many temporary houses supplied to displaced families are basically swamped. Although reconstruction started, than halted, now not even sure if continued, over 30000 still living in UNWRA centers. - Egypt has been forging away with destroying homes on Rafah border on the Egyptian side, to build a buffer zone between Gaza and North Sinai, after deadly attacks. In the process, they discovered hundreds of tunnels, built under mosques, and homes. Some bigger tunnels were destroyed, some with armory and some, claimed to be smuggling tunnels for cars and construction materials. So, Egypt has closed its Rafah crossing, and Hamas is urging them to open it. - As a result of yesterday rocket launched toward Israels Gaza bordering communities (no injuries or damages reported), Israel has decided to close both the Kerem Shalom(used for supplies and goods, including water, gas; food etz) and the Erez crossing (used for workers crossing and medical patients). So, basically, tomorrow Gaza is completely shut off. - Temple mount: after being completely closed to ALL on Thursday, the compound was reopened for Friday prayers for all Muslim men over 50 and women of all ages. Tomorrow it will also reopen for all visitors, including Jews. As a result of Israels decision on Thursday, Jordan claimed it will reconsider the peace truce agreement with Israel. - Hamas has said in so many unpleasant words, such as we will come to uproot you, kill you and destroy your land...missiles and arms of faith will crush the occupying zionists, brothers of monkeys and pigs...etz. Such lovely people... - Islamic Jihad claimed that Balfour statement is null and the end of Israel will arrive. - So, on the bright side: Izhak Rabin, mostly remembered for leading peace efforts, was assassinated by a radical Jew, 19 years ago. Today was the annual memorial rally in Rabin Square, Tel Aviv. Although rainy, thousands showed up, united by his legacy and vision of a peaceful Jewish State of Israel. Ex President Peres gave a moving and some will say passionate speech, advocating peace as the future for Israel and the entire Middle East, quoting the words of the song he sang side by side with Rabin, at that same spot minutes before his killing- Dont say the day (for peace) will come, bring on that day. On a personal note- Only today did I gather courage to watch the awful video. it hurts me today, as it did 19 years ago, when i got the news while between classes in Indiana University. Inconceivable. I will write more on this soon.meanwhile here is a clip of the rally for peace in 1995 with Rabin and Shimon Peres שמעון פרס
