Midhurst - rural community of 3,500 to 30,000 in 15 yrs? Good planning? Some say no #ONpoli A small community in central Ontario - Midhurst - is slated to be Simcoe Countys newest sprawl city. Plans call to remove 1900 acres of prime farmland to grow Midhurst from 3,500 to over 30,000 people - a population increase of 856% in roughly 15 years! It is a close neighbour to the internationally signficant Minesing Wetlands - the largest intact wetland in Southern Ontario, home to rare and endangered species and one of the top 10 wetlands in the WORLD for its biodiversity. Since Midhurst does not lie on a large body of water, the waste water and potential sewage leaks from this new city will forever be dumped into this national and international treasure. Unfortunately, since provincial planning policies were gutted by a rare ministerial special rule specific to Midhurst, only the residents of this small town and their allies are trying to preserve the Minesing Wetlands and its contribution to our water quality and eco-systems. This is a plan that initially the province said wasnt necessary and met very few established planning policies. We should not threaten such a unique eco-system so casually.
