Midtown Writers Association Incorporated is a 501-C-3 Not-For-Profit Organization. No monies collected goes into any of our pockets. All money is used to fund Kafe Kuumba and the Ujima House. All Members and Workers PAY to support and participate in Midtown Writers activities. That goes for MWAI Officers, the ones collecting admission fees and those who collect for refreshments and snacks. All the Drummers and regular patrons pay out of their pockets to help keep Kafe Kuumba operating. Only our Featured Artist dont have to pay to get in, plus we offer a stipend to our Feature Artist that also comes out of our pockets. Some have complained that they thought it is unfair and unrealistic that they should have to pay to perform and share their art on the Kafe Kuumba stage. MWAI has never been given any grant monies to operate in its 25 years of existence. We depend on ourselves and we depend on you to fund our organization. We also want to get younger Artist to eventually take over our operations so that Midtown Writers Association Incorporated Kafe Kuumba Thursday Night Open Mic will continue to be the longest running Open Mic in the State and in the Mid-West.
