Midweek Sports Wrap-Up UEFA Champions League Round16 Fixtures – 12 March 2014 • Paris SG vs. Bayern Leverkusen (aggregate 6-1) • Barcelona vs. Manchester City (aggregate 4-1) Paris SG vs. Bayern Leverkusen (2-1) agg 6-1 S. Sam 55’ Marquinhos 13’ E. Lavezzi 53’ Paris SG played a training game more than anything else because there was no way they would let a 4-0 lead slip. PSG played with a rather inexperienced line-up though with the likes of January signing Yohan Cabaye and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. PSG did look a bit nervy at the start of the game though, this was highlighted when Sidney Sam’s headed the 1st goal in 6 minutes from a good corner by Giulio Donati. Marquinhos returned the favour by levelling the score to 1-1 with a header as well, created by the new man Cabaye from a corner. The gamed was dead and dusted when Lavezzi capped off the games goals, assisted by Left back Lucas Digne. PSG will say “Thank you” and “Good luck” as they smile and wave to their German opposition, in a game that really meant nothing. Barcelona vs. Manchester City (2-1) agg 4-1 L. Messi 67’ V.Kompany 89’ D. Alves 90’ Manchester City’s performance at Camp Nou was nothing to ride home about and they looked off the pace for most of the game. The midfield of Barcelona was more than City could handle, as they played the way City should have in the 1st leg. They were not assisted by the Officials whose shoddy decisions may or may not have swung the game to either team’s favour. E.g. Neymar’s penalty decision was denied, Dzeko’s penalty decision was denied, Zabaleta got a red card, Vincent Kompany’s goal, etc. Messi’s 1st goal could have easily been prevented by Lescott, but he did not control the ball under his feet which allowed Messi to score. Kompany’s consolation goal looked a mile offside, but the goal stood without much discontent at the bad decision as if Barca knew that Alves, who was given ample time and space was allowed to score a minute later. Barcelona was not playing at their peak, but they didn’t have to because City did not play without fear and strife. This game was not a case of “you win some, you lose some”, it was more like “you defend well, you win well”. PSL • Platinum starts vs. Kaizer Chiefs (0-2) • Moroka Swallows vs. Orlando Pirates (0-1) Platinum starts vs. Kaizer Chiefs (0-2) S Mthembu 9’ R ngambi 59’ Platinum Stars struck Gold against their Johannesburg opposition Kaizer Chiefs at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng. Stars did exceptionally well to defeat a Chiefs team who have not lost in 16 games. Siphelele Mthembu’s goal was induced by a mistake by Chiefs defender, Willard Katsande in the 1st minute of the game. The striker was calm and decisive in front of the goal, as he went round stand-in Chiefs goalkeeper Reyaard Pieterse slotted in the goal. Kaizer Chiefs did not give up so easily though, as Simphiwe Tshabalala took charge of the midfield, shooting at the goal multiple times and creating numerous opportunities for his strikers, which included Mphela who failed to capitalize. Platinum Stars deserved to win the game and will be a stepping stone for a possible title push. Moroka Swallows vs. Orlando Pirates (0-1) K. Erasmus 9’ Orlando Pirates showed their dominance by defeating Moroka Swallows in a Soweto derby at the Dobsonvillle Stadium. Pirates came flying out the blocks in the 1st half by a 9-minute goal by Kermit Erasmus, which would impress new coach Vladimir Vermezovic. The 1st half was controlled by Pirates as Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was a spectator, not having to make a single save. Pirates did not experience much resistance from the Swallows unit until much later in the game when Nomvethe’s strike hit the upright. Senzo Meyiwa kept his concentration by showing his heroics in a stoppage time double save from the strikes of Nomvethe and Cohen. Swallows have not won in 7 games which is a contrast to how entertaining their play was last season, meanwhile Pirates go 4th in the log, as they prepare against their rivals Amakhosi this weekend. Cricket South Africa vs. Australia 2nd T20 Australia 82/5 beat South Africa 80/1 Australia won by 5 wickets Australia Warner 40, Hodge 21*, Duminy 2-5 South Africa (De Kock 41*, du Plessis 27*) by five wickets David Warner was South Africas tormentor again at the start of the chase, as he and Aaron Finch took 21 off Lonwabo Tsotsobes first over. Warner then hit debutant Beuran Hendricks for three successive boundaries in the third over as Australia surged to 44 for 1 in three overs. South Africa hit back with four strikes in the next three, including Warner, caught in front for 40 off 16 missing a switch-hit against JP Duminy, whose only over went for five and produced two wickets. Brad Hodge clubbed the third and fourth deliveries of the last over over deep midwicket to haul Australia home in a seven-over shootout against South Africa in Durban. Steady rain had threatened successive washouts in the series but relented to allow a sizeable crowd some action. Australia lead the 3-match series 1-0 with one game to go.
