Midwestern Gothic and The Residential College at the University of Michigan present: Voices of the Middle West: A Celebration of Writers and Independent Presses featuring Author Curtis Sittenfeld March 22, 2014 Bookfair and Festival: East Quad Atrium, 10 AM - 5 PM Curtis Sittenfeld Keynote Address: Keene Theater, 5 PM Public Reception in the East Quad Atrium immediately following Sittenfeld’s address This one-day conference and book fair will bring together writers, independent publishers, UM faculty and students, and our regional literary community. We’ll gather a variety of voices, from the Detroit area to up north, all in one place, all on one day, to celebrate the diversity and richness of our regional literature. Area authors, publishers, and UM faculty will offer panel discussions on writing opportunities, the art and business of publishing, and the current state of Midwest literature. Acclaimed authors Jack Driscoll, Lolita Hernandez, and Jeff Vande Zande will talk about how the Midwest has shaped their fiction and the future of Midwestern literature. The book fair will showcase literary organizations, publishers, and authors from the Detroit area, Southeastern Michigan, and Mid-Michigan. The festival will be headlined by a special keynote speaker, lifelong Midwesterner Curtis Sittenfeld, author of the bestselling novels Sisterland, American Wife, Prep, and The Man of My Dreams. Prep was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of 2005 by The New York Times, and American Wife was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of 2008 by Time, People, and Entertainment Weekly; both were nominated for the UK’s Orange Prize. The festival will also offer an open mic and a panel discussion of campus student literary publications. Throughout the day there will be a bookfair held in the atrium of the newly renovated East Quad. The bookfair will showcase literary journals and independent presses from all over the Midwest selling their latest issues and books. Panelists’ and featured writers’ books will be available as well.
