Might be a good time to remind fanciers and the newer greener amongst us some care of breeding hens in the stock or race loft;; Consider!! When cocks are driving they can be real mean, not allowing the hen to eat or drink. This happens mostly when there are lots of pairs in the same section. Basically the only place the cock is happy with is the nestbox, soon as she is in there he chills. Trouble is she never gets any grit or minerals cos he won’t let her on the floor, so you must make sure she has it in her nestbox at the time she needs it most. Adding Calciform (Aviform) to the drinker a couple of times per week will also help all hens maintain a reasonable level of calcium. If calcium is not available to hens that are constantly laying (breeding) the body will draw it from the actual bones which could in turn be the cause of the lameness suffered by many hens/lofts. Also worth noting is that manufactured pigeon grit can be dodgy, always buy the better brands like VL, Beyers, Natural etc. and if you like nuke it in the microwave for 30 secs to be sure all the bacteria is eliminated. For the love of Budda don’t pick shells from the beach to crush, there a very good chance you will poison your team Good breeding hens will lay upto 12+ years old if looked after with a little extra thought throughout their lives.
