Migrante Alberta Calls on Philippine Government to Provide Genuine Service for the Victims of Deadly Crash near Sylvan Lake December 23, 2014 Contact info: Jhong dela Cruz (403) 392-8286 migrantealberta@gmail Migrante Alberta Calls on Philippine Government to Provide Genuine Service for the Victims of Deadly Crash near Sylvan Lake The remains of the Filipino victims of the most recent fatal crash in Rocky Mountain House this month are set to come home on December 27, yet the Philippine Government stopped short of providing basic services to the victims and their families. This came with a reminder posted on its website for Filipinos to take extra caution when driving in this winter condition. Three Filipino workers were killed in a deadly crash near Sylvan Lake on December 13th, with one other individual recuperating from injuries sustained from the incident. The four had just finished attending language training in Red Deer and were heading back to Rocky Mountain House when the Ford Mustang they were riding in was hit by a five-ton truck on Highway 11. The Philippine government represented by its consul general in Vancouver and honorary consul Esmeralda Agbulos were quick to offer their condolences. After this however, the RP officials had not reached out to offer assistance for repatriation or extend financial support for the victims and their families according to the employers who had led fundraising efforts and funeral arrangements. Owners of both restaurants have set up a trust account with Rocky Mountain Credit Union with trust name: Panago and Dairy Queen In Trust of our Filipino Workers, Account No. 723050162483. Different sectors across the community have been donating with the goal of repatriating the bodies of the victims of the crash. Migrante Alberta for its part has called on its members to support fundraising efforts from the community, with the hopes that the donations will assist the families as they receive the remains in the Philippines. Migrante Alberta demands the Philippine Government to take responsibility for the repatriation of the remains and other supports that the families may require during this time. It is ultimately the Philippine Government’s responsibility to provide these services through its consular offices. Cynthia Palmaria of Migrante Alberta in Edmonton, said “services such as repatriation, is a basic service that the Philippine Government must provide for everyone, as part of its service to nationals. These services must come standard to all overseas Filipino workers who they regard as Bagong Bayani (Modern Heroes).” Ruben Deogracias, 34, and Blesilda “Blessie” Capule Orbigo, 28, worked at the Rocky Mountain House Dairy Queen, while Napoleon Orbigo, 29, worked at Panago. Nap and Blessie had only been married since September. All were considered by their employers as “fantastic employees”, dependable and hard workers. Moreover, Migrante Alberta also calls on Honorary Consul Agbulos to provide transparency for collected funds from an earlier fatal accident where four Filipino TFWs also perished on November 22. Hon. Consul Agbulos had assisted in fundraising by setting up an ATB account as well as collecting donations during the memorial service of the four TFWs.
