Migrating butterflies! If you spend much time in Florida this time of year, you’re likely to see millions of butterflies flying south, including the regal monarch. These graceful beauties migrate from northern regions down to Mexico, stopping along the way in places like the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Here, our biologists sample the population, collecting the butterflies while sleeping in trees and bushes. Very gently, sticker tags are placed on the insects before they are released back into the wild. This process allows our team to track and improve the monarchs’ declining population.
