Mijas week in review: Monday: This was a typical Monday!! Mom had to keep telling Mija to stay awake while she was eating. She did manage to eat 70% of her breakfast. In PT/OT, Mija worked on sitting balance on the therapy bed. She worked on corrective movements to help correct her sitting posturing. The therapist also had her work on lifting her left arm. Speech therapy worked with Mija in the room. She started with memory skills. Short-term memory is still hard. The therapist had her eat in the room. She ate 70% of her meal. In music therapy, the therapist had each person draw a number out of a bag and kick the drum with each foot that number of times. Mijas highest number was 6. She was able to kick the drum with both feet 6 times. They also worked on beating out rhythms. At supper, Mija ate 50% of her meal. She was so tired that it took her a very long time to eat. Mom had given her a shower earlier in the afternoon so she was ready for bed after she ate. Tuesday: Mom hoped Tuesday would be better than Monday since she hit a deer last night! Moms fine, her car just got a little banged up! Mija was just getting out of the shower when mom got there. After a few bites of breakfast, they got on the bus and headed to KU Med Center for a swallow test. She can start trialing regular food with the speech therapist. She will continue to eat pureed food at meal time until the therapist says she is ready for regular food at meal time. When they got back, Mija ate a few bites of lunch before she headed to PT/OT. OT stretched her neck and the right side of her body. She put e-stim on her neck and shoulders. The PT worked with kicking both feet. A squeaky toy was put under first with one foot and then the other. Mija did a great job! Wednesday: Mija had a shower before breakfast. She loved her oatmeal and sausage. She ate 75% of her breakfast. In OT, the therapist worked on ADLs today. The therapist had her brush her teeth with a regular toothbrush, wash her face and comb her hair by herself. The therapist just did stand-by assist. She then had Mija work with the steps of putting on a jacket. She did better this time than last time. In PT, the therapists had Mija sit on the therapy mat. They had her push on the arm rest of her chair to assist with standing. When on the mat, they asked her to use her right hand and scoot to the left. Mija was able to scoot herself over several times. They laid her down and had her roll over on her side and back to her other side. Mija just needed verbal cues to do this. She is assisting more with her stands. The OT and PT both stretched her neck, shoulders, and back. She was very tight. In speech, the therapist worked on memory skills. The therapist came at the end of her lunch to watch her eat. She ate 75% of her meal. In Dr. Marys session, the discussion centered around forgiveness. Mija laid down after the session until supper. At supper, she ate 50% of her meal. Thursday: Mija had another big day. She ate about 60% of her breakfast. Mija was pushed in front on the sink and mirror so she could brush her teeth, wash her face and comb her hair. Her sister, Mauri, drove to Gardner after she worked all night at Lawrence to visit her sister this morning. She and her sister enjoyed talking before she started therapy. In OT/ PT, the therapists had Mija sit on the therapy mat. They had her push with her hand to straighten her body. Her shoulders were tight so they put hot packs on her shoulders. They asked her to bend forward and then push herself up with her hands. She did this 10 times on her own. They had her lean on each elbow. Mija was able to sit unassisted for 15 minutes. The therapists ended the session with stretching her arms, shoulders and neck out. In speech, since Mija had a doctors appointment at 1:00, she ate at 11:00 with the speech therapist. The doctors appointment took the entire afternoon. Mija was so tired that she could not stay awake. She did not feel like trying to eat dinner. Mom was afraid that she would fall asleep and choke. Instead mom gave her a shower and helped put her to bed. She will get a bolus later. Friday: Mija ate 75% of her breakfast. In PT/OT, the therapist had her reach for the parallel bars and stand up. She needed maximum assist to stand but only required medium assist to remain standing. The first time she stood for 4 minutes and the second time she stood for almost 15 minutes. After she stood, Mija worked with the OT on picking up plastic pegs with her left hand and dropped them one by one into a container. She was able to do 10 pegs. The speech therapist watched Mija eat breakfast for half of her therapy time. The second part was spent on determining how large letters needed to be written in order for Mija to be able to see them. At lunch, she ate 50% of her lunch. Mijas dad came to visit her this afternoon for awhile. Margo, Haven and Bailee are visiting tonight. Thanks for all of the continued prayers and good vibes/karma and please keep them coming!
