Mika Kallio takes Indianapolis GP win on his Zircotec equipped bike closing Championship gap to only seven points from teammate Rabat. Mika Kallio lived up to his Iceman nickname as the Finn took a flag to flag victory in both parts of the red-flagged Indianapolis Moto2 Grand Prix. Kallio had already launched himself into a two second lead in the first part of the race by setting some blistering lap times right from the start. A multi bike collision on lap four then saw the race stopped to recover the machines and the riders with West, Shah, Krummenacher all involved. Pasini was unconscious at the scene and after recovering and walking away, was taken to hospital for precautionary scans. Cool as the proverbial cucumber, Kallio though took it all in his stride and repeated his lightening start in the now shortened to 16 laps second part of the race. But this race too was not without incident as three riders crashed out in turn one of lap one thankfully unhurt and not requiring another halt to proceedings. As a consequence of the same incident another three riders had to take avoiding action and lost significant ground. If that was not enough as the race progressed one of those riders Simeon crashed out four laps later trying to make up lost ground. A further two riders Morbidelli and Salom collided some time later in the race with Salom able to continue but only able to finish the race in 26th position whilst Morbidelli was forced out as a result. With all this chaos going on behind him Mika rode serenely on keeping up a good pace on his ceramic coated machine. He eventually crossed the line with a 1.4 second lead over rookie sensation Maverick Vignales with Swiss rider Dominique Agerter finishing third. Kallio’s teammate, championship leader Tito Rabat was sitting in second place for most of the race. Unfortunately a heavy crash in practice compounded by a lack of rear grip hindered him during the course of the race itself. With two laps to go the combination of pain and no grip eventually forced an uncharacteristic error from the normally faultless Spaniard. Tito finished the race in fourth place and saw his championship lead cut to seven points as he and Mika could potentially take the title fight right to the wire. Newcomer to the team Jorge Navarro enjoyed a fantastic start to his Marc VDS career. He started by qualifying his Zircotec coated KTM 250 sixth on the grid which is the best Moto3 qualifying position for a Marc VDS Moto3 rider ever. He was then involved in a titanic battle with several other riders throughout the race for a top ten finish. Jorge eventually lost out in the tactical masterclass of slipstreaming and overtaking displayed by his rivals and crossed the line in 14th place. All in all a superb debut from the 18 year old Spanish rider and it looks like the second half of the season could be hotting up for the Moto3 Marc VDS team.
