Mike Feldmann here you go: 1. The Hobbit- Tolkien-- the first novel I read, the book that started it all. The first time I remember imagining was while reading this. 2. The Unfortunate Fursey- Mervyn Wall-- a satire/comedy about a monk expelled from his (demon-infested) monastery because of a speech impediment which renders him unable to perform exorcisms. Havent come across a book remotely similar. 3. The Cruel Sea- Monsarrat-- read this so long ago, but if i remember correctly, its a masterpiece. About men (still boys, some) on a warship during WWII-- Monsarrat paints their fear, brotherhood, longing and love in a way thats hard to forget 4. The Divine Comedy- Dantes spiritual journey, a synthesis of medieval theology, makes use of some of the most beautiful and enlightening metaphors Ive ever come across. Helped me better understand the Christian faith. Still working on it. 5.The Translation of Father Torturo- Brendan Connell-- A recent find. Gruesome but gripping. The ascent of a corrupt (well, thats for you to decide) priest to the throne of St. Peter. Karma provides the driving force for the plot. 6. Four Ways to Forgiveness- Le Guin-- Four short stories, set on different worlds, in different societies. Seamlessly intertwined. No one treats love like Ursula K. Le Guin does. 7. I, Claudius- Graves. How decadent, conflicted Rome looks from the top, from the perspective of one of its more unlikely rulers. 8. The Dispossessed- Le Guin-- One of her best. A physicist, upon making a great discovery, leaves his social anarchist planet for a wealthy, stratified one. Incisive commentary on family and society. A beautiful story. 9. Deliver Us From Normal- Klise-- How a family can weather all. Sad and funny, often simultaneously. 10. Thus Spoke Zarathustra- Nietzche-- In the midst of it right now. Nietzches more immediately understandable for me than any other philosopher Ive read. Elitist and cynical, but also often correct. One who does not obey himself will be commanded. Nominate: Pablo Woodman Trevor Bak Torre Johnson Naomi Charlotte Mine Daisy Brzezinska
