Mike Hawkins, lovingly known as Brother Mike is and always will be my brother..MY FAMILY! Ive spent this entire day trying to keep it together, but it has turned into one meltdown after another. Everything hurts. He is so much of who I am...weve been so much together and all of it has been a triumph to me. Ive heard his voice all day, Keesh G! I never knew how much I loved hearing him say that until today. A warm smile would always follow. He would let me in when I knew no one else could get through. One of my highlights of being a promoter in Chicago was Lyricist Loft...I remember when he brought the idea to me. It was all that we were. That loft embodied so much energy and talent...a space of true creation!!! There would be no BW Collectiv without that spark and the belief that he had in me to step out and be the artist I was destined to be. He was the first person to tell me that my poetry was actually good. He made me get up on the mic and I loved him for that! Black Fist and Poetree Chicago are my family, my foundation and to think that in the span of 3 months we have lost two soldiers is crippling. Im so grateful that last year, when he visited LA, I was able to take him to see Femi Kuti for the first time. He was in his element! I was able to express to him that night that I wanted to do The Marley Monologues again. He gave me his blessings and He knew that we would have to do it together: Rita and Bob back together again. :-) It hurts that I was planning on reaching out to start the process this month, but now I know I must do it... it will be a tribute to all that he is, A BLACK MAN, A Son, A Brother, A Poet, An Artist, A Mentor, An Activist, A REVOLUTION!!! Im so proud of the man you became and the impact youve made on this world. I LOVE YOU BROTHER, ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!!
