Mike Michauds Endorsement by Maine Conservation Voters Last Friday, supporters of Maine Conservation Voters gathered on the banks of the Penobscot River to announce our board’s early endorsement of Mike Michaud for Governor. We were 80 miles downstream from Medway where Mike first began his political career in 1980, when he ran for the Maine Legislature because he wanted to clean up the Penobscot’s polluted waters. You can read our press release and see coverage from the event on our website at maineconservation.org. Getting out early to support Mike is essential to our goal of defeating Governor Paul LePage at the ballot box in November. Gov. LePage came in with a wrecking ball three years ago and has repeatedly attacked protections for Maine’s water, land, and wildlife. Instead of making progress on pressing issues like clean energy and climate change, we’ve been defending the last 40 years of hard-won laws and protections. Over the last four months, MCV conducted a thorough evaluation of the gubernatorial candidates including personal interviews, answers to detailed questionnaire surveys, individual candidate meetings with MCV members, and an analysis of the candidates’ public voting records, public and personal actions, and statements. Mike’s story is one of political courage and environmental leadership. Mike said ‘enough is enough’ to the sludge being dumped into Maine’s waters by his own employer. He helped clean up the Penobscot, and in the Maine Legislature and in Congress he’s been a leader on dozens of environmental and economic policies. Hes a champion for clean air, land and water resources, for clean energy and keeping toxics out of the environment. He’s earned a 92% lifetime score on national LCV’s Scorecard. We endorsed Mike because Maine people need a governor who gets it – a governor who sees the connection between conserving Maine’s natural resources, creating new economic opportunities, and protecting the health of Maine people. We need a governor who is grounded in Maine values and also comfortable leading Maine into the future – a governor who will bring us together to create and sustain the jobs that support our farmers, fishermen, scientists, guides, clean energy providers, and everyone who is building Maine’s natural resource-based economy. It’s going to take all of us working together to make sure we elect a new, pro-environment governor in November! We’ll be reaching out soon with more details about our campaign.
