She looked a little pensive (I barely noticed, Im afraid). She paused for a moment and then said, Am I like my mother? My fingers instantly froze in mid-air. All I could think was some variant of Danger Will Robinson! and Admiral Akbars Its a TRAAAAP! In a split second part of my unconscious mind searched down all possible avenues for a way out of this, but short of jumping out of the window there was seemingly nothing I could say or do that wouldnt make things much worse. And then, from somewhere, I dont know where, came what I think now was the only possible thing I could say to defuse the situation. I turned to my wife and said, Does this dress make me look fat? Her pensive look vanished and she laughed. Without acknowledging the difficulty of the situation, that there even had been a potentially explosive situation, we went on and she explained in a much less minefield-laden way what she was thinking about. Crisis averted, correct wire snipped to stop the bomb from exploding, we all went back to a quiet evening at home at DEFCON 5. Whew. Just another day as a happily married guy. ;)
