Mike Sharkey, Scottsdale, 06/17/14 Opinions, Az Republic: Charter Schools are successful due to enrolling mostly successful students. Regarding charters give parents what they want: Choice by Eileen Sigmund and Glenn Hamer (Viewpoints, Sunday): They claim that charter success can be seen in the fact that the majority of Arizonas top-ranked public schools are charters. This is a logical fallacy. Charters have an innate selection bias of students with a predilection for success. Parents choose to send their children to charter schools. That implies parental involvement. Families also have to have the means to transport students to charters. That implies higher socio-economic status. Both of these are proven indicators of successful students. My point is that charters are successful because they mostly enroll successful students. Charters are part of the solution but they arent the only solution. We need a balance of public schools, charter schools and government funding to ensure that Arizona students are properly educated for our states future.
