Mike has been switched over to CPAP during the night as well as - TopicsExpress

Mike has been switched over to CPAP during the night as well as during the day, which is the lowest mode supported on the vent. During the day, he was able to breathe entirely for himself on trach collar. His mom had the idea that offering him his speaking valve might provide incentive and distraction from anxiety; it was certainly wonderful to hear his voice again today. His first words (looking at me) I love you. Then he looked to his mom, standing closer to his feet I love you. And then he turned to Cory, his respiratory therapist, and said Thank you. Cory kidded he wasnt feeling loved. It was a very nice moment, and makes me feel tepidly hopeful about this new year. His anxiety is probably the result of past failed weaning attempts, which stemmed from sepsis, latent pneumonia, and flat out unreadiness. This time, he seems better ready than before, and we all know how to deal better with his anxiety to keep him moving forward. When I noticed he was using the clock to determine how long hed be off the vent, I took it down from the wall, and got rewarded with the birdie finger for nearly a minute, with his mom looking on. She knows him and accepts him, and so do I. What looked hopeless yesterday looks promising today. Itll be tough getting him to breathe 24 hours on his own by Monday, but it seems at least a possibility now, and one that must be taken to avoid his relocation to Minneapolis. Yesterday, he did not make any forward progress, other than staying on CPAP mode most of the day.
