Mikel Battles Essien, Van Ginkel For Chelsea Shirt -Eagles Storms USA With Blues’ Squad The return of John Mikel Obi to the mainframe of London-based English Premier League club, Chelsea has been confirmed, but he is set to start a potentially tough battle for a regular place in The Blues’ squad against a catalogue of celebrated stars, led by Ghana’s Michael Essien and new arrival, Mako van Ginkel. Mikel has been missing from The Blues’ squad since the commencement of the EPL side’s pre-season programme but, with the vastly-improved Super Eagles star now heading to America with the team, the battle for shirts ahead of next season is now expected to commence in earnest. Aside Essien and Van Ginkel, Mikel will also have to contend with the potentials of versatile players like David Luiz, Ramires, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Oscar, who can also fit in as holding midfielders, if the need arises, and all hold credible potentials of limiting the former Lyn Oslo of Norway star’s presence in the starting line-up this coming season. The first sign of what is to come and lying in store for Mikel will be unfolded this Thursday, when Chelsea go out for their first match of the USA tour against Jose Mourinho’s former club, Inter Milan of Italy in God’s Own Country. It marks a return to the Chelsea squad for Mikel, who has been mired in transfer speculations since the end of last season but, with Galatasaray of Turkey failing to meet The Blues’ valuation of the player, while AS Monaco of France and Aznhi Makhachkala of Russia did not match interest with official bids for the ace midfielder, the former Lyn Oslo of Norway star has finally announced that he is staying put at Stamford Bridge. To this end, Mikel has returned to Chelsea for the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup in Miami, USA, which will also mark an end to a long holiday, after he was given leave of absence by the club, following his participation at recent 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Mikel will now be looking forward to play his first game under returnee Mourinho on the gaffer’s second spell at Stamford Bridge, but it will surely not be a stroll into the starting squad for the star, who thrilled at both the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA Confederations Cup.
