Miles Matsumura This is our friend, Michael Preston of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe. His people were displaced and their lands, homes, and burial sites drowned when the Shasta Dam in northern California was built during the 1940s. They were promised new lands, homes, and compensation -- promises which were not kept. NOW, the U.S. government plans to raise the dam level another 18 feet. (You all saw in the news what happened to NY & NJ when Sandys storm surge raised waters 14 feet. All of Hoboken and much of Jersey City -- including my apartment -- were under water, as were communities in Long Island, NYC, and the Jersey Shore. Our Sandy flood was just one night. Can you imagine an 18 ft. flood which never goes away?) WHERE YOU COME IN The Shasta plan will permanently displace the Winnemem Wintu people by taking away -- drowning -- whatever lands, homes, farms, and sites they have left. Michael asks the good people of the United States to help his people by contacting your U.S. Senators and Representatives to vote NO to funding the raising of the Shasta Dam (more info below). youtu.be/wpU5hEPSkNA winnememwintu.us/journey-to-justice/shasta-dam-raise/
