Military police fired rubber bullets at protesters in Rio de Janeiro yesterday. Thousands took to the streets in the up-market suburb of Barra da Tijuca to protest against the state auction of a major offshore oil field (one of the biggest in the world) to a conglomerate of foreign oil companies. The government of Dilma Rousseff, which considers the exploitation of the field to be the keystone of its energy policy, mobilized over 1,000 military troops and national guardsmen to keep protesters from disrupting the auction. Interestingly, the countrys protesting oil workers, who feel the government is selling off its national patrimony to foreign investors, explicitly allied themselves with Rios increasingly powerful anarchist movement, which has been mobilizing big Black Blocs in defense of recent teachers protests as well.
