Military prosecutor & brother killed in Benghazi car bomb attack A military prosecutor and his brother were killed in a car bomb attack in Benghazi on Thursday, in the latest addition to a recent wave of politically motivated assassinations in Libya’s eastern region. Yousef al-Asifer and his brother died as a result of wounds inflicted from the homemade device that was place under their car, Colonel Abdullah Zaidi, Benghazi Joint Security Room spokesman, said on Thursday. When al-Asifer arrived at Benghazi Medical Centre, his condition was reported to be critical by a medical source, however, he rapidly deteriorated. Last week, unknown gunmen murdered a Libyan bomb disposal officer in Benghazi on Friday when he was on his way to Friday prayers. Colonel Mustafa al-Mugrabi had more than 30 rounds shot at him while others were able to escape the gunfire. On Monday 19th August, retired judge Muftah Mohamed Khafeefi, 79, was assassinated Benghazi by a group of unknown gunmen, also when leaving mosque after leaving morning prayers. An obvious crisis is confronting Libya’s security who are struggling to figure who the culprits may be, although it points towards a politically motivated group, or individual, aiming to undermine security and kill military, judiciary, human rights and policing senior figures, all of whom appear to be major targets for assassination in Benghazi and surrounding eastern areas.
