Milk again!? A new article indicates (as I have iterated in several previous posts) that milk is simply not healthy. This particular article published in the British Medical Journal indicates that a high intake of milk is associated with a HIGHER risk of fracture and a higher risk of DEATH is men and women. Milk has long been considered the perfect food…….but only if youre a baby cow in my opinion. The USDA recommends 3 cups of dairy daily to improve bone mass but with little evidence to support the recommendation. Dairy makes up 10-15% of our diets…..but only in the last 9000 years……before that, we made it for 2 million years with nothing but human dairy early in life. Milk intake averaging over 3 cups daily INCREASES inflammation in the body and oxidative stress. Inflammation and oxidation mean damage to cells and potentially a higher risk for heart disease, neurologic disease, and other aging related disease. The chemical thought to be responsible for this is D-galactose, which is half of lactose (milk sugar). Remember that 65% of the world cant tolerate lactose……thats in my video…..so should we really be consuming things that cause illness in the majority of humans? Milk is also often taken from cows during pregnancy and immediately post, meaning (especially for organic milk), it is full of hormones. These tend to be GROWTH hormones……..and the worst one is IGF-1, or insulin like growth factor, which we know promotes the growth of cancer cells. Interestingly, fermented milk products, yogurts, and cheese, didnt have the same negative association with fracture and mortality in this study which involved a total of over 100,000 patients. What needs to be kept in mind is that this study was a look back using dietary questionnaires, not a prospective study……..so association of milk with higher mortality doesnt mean causation……although the association seems very strong. We drink unsweetened organic almond milk in my house. Everyone….even the kids.
