Milton beats Bay April 17, 2013, 8 a.m. GREAT WIN: The Milton Rugby Club had an exciting win over Bateman’s Bay at Frogs Holla on Saturday with fullback Hayden Stirling setting up the first try of the game. New recruit, Jesse Piekar, sparkled with two tries in his second start for Milton but it was a complete team performance by the Platypi for a six tries to four victory. Milton got off to a flyer, dominating the early stage of play both in attack and defence. The hit ups by the forward pack around the edges had Batemans Bay back pedalling. This, combined with the up in your face defence, had the Batemans Bay forwards on the back foot, which allowed Milton’s backs to take advantage of the holes created. Grant Oliver crossed for an early try, after great lead up work by fullback Hayden Stirling. The heat began to take its toll on the players, as fatigue started to play a part in proceedings. Play flowed from end to end, with another try scored by each side before half time, for the teams to go to the main break at 12-12. After the break, Milton was bolstered by the addition of inspirational club captain Simon Davies who, due to personal reasons, missed the first half. The second half again produced entertaining rugby, with both sides throwing everything at each other. Again the sides went try for try, with a combination of entertaining rugby and mistakes were made due to fatigue from the hot weather. With 10 minutes remaining, Milton found themselves two points behind, after Batemans Bay took advantage of some ill disciplined play by Milton, to score a try against the run of play. With time running out, those who turned up at Frogs Holla witnessed a moment of magic by outside centre Jesse Piekar. Batemans Bay launched a midfield attack after another turnover, Piekar rounded up the Bay’s flanker with a ball and all tackle on the halfway line, ripped the ball from his grasp, turned, fended off a couple of tacklers and outsprinted the cover defence, to score a brilliant individual try, to put the Platypi back in front. Mat Ringland coolly slotted the conversion, to give Milton a four-point lead, with minutes to play. Milton scored again in the dying minutes, to give them a resounding 38-26 victory over their arch rivals and kick start their season in their quest for the illusive premiership, so desired. Tries were scored by Grant Oliver (two), Jesse Piekar (two), Lewis Tait and Mitch Rixon, one each. Matt Ringland kicked 4/6 conversions. Next week Milton takes on last years runners up, Bombala, at Frogs Holla, in another home game at 3pm. The coaching staff is very happy with the first up effort by the players however are worried about a few injuries to key players and a couple of other player unavailability’s for next week. Milton is keen to bolster their squad, in an attempt to win their first premiership in a number of years. If anyone is interested in joining the team, where they will be guaranteed an enjoyable year on and off the field, please attend training at Frogs Holla every Thursday night at 6.30pm, where everyone is welcome. Milton Rugby would like to thank all of their sponsors, including the Star Hotel, South Coast Storage, Ulladulla Joinery, Ted’s Butcher, Bendigo Bank and the Milton Newsagency for their continued support and hope to see another bumper crowd at Frogs Holla on Saturday afternoon.
