Minimalism, like some elements of Buddhism, can be viewed as attempts by civilized individuals to compensate for the dehumanizing effects of civilization, while simultaneously defending civilization. From a cynical perspective, it can be seen as Spectacular recuperation of hunter-gatherer simplicity. From a positive perspective, it can be seen as the human spirit struggling to escape mediation, abstraction, and control. The latter perspective demonstrates a strong undercurrent of anarcho-primitivism searching for an explanatory framework.
