Mining services firm Hastings Seering cuts 400 jobs AAP July 31, 2014 3:47PM ABOUT 400 staff from major mining services company Hastings Deering will be sacked by the end of today. The company, which has a head office in Brisbane, released a statement yesterday saying challenging market conditions has forced its decision to reduce its permanent workforce by today. “It is anticipated that this will result in approximately 400 redundancies across Hastings Deering business which will be implemented this month,” the statement said. The company said it had implemented a number of efficiency and productivity measures in the past 12 months but none were enough to offset challenging market conditions. Hastings Deering is one of the largest Caterpillar machinery dealers in the world and employs nearly 5000 people, with branches across regional Queensland, the Northern Territory, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union state official Brad Hansen says he’s in talks with the company in an eleventh hour bid to save jobs. “We are concerned about the number of redundancies and we are trying to work with the company to redeploy staff where ever it’s possible to save a job,” he said. He said he was not surprised by how quickly the lay-offs were made as the company had behaved in a similar fashion in June last year where about 200 jobs were immediately made redundant. The latest cuts have been across the company however the union was yet to ascertain which regions or parts of the business are most affected. theaustralian.au/business/mining-energy/mining-services-firm-hastings-seering-cuts-400-jobs/story-e6frg9df-1227008887799?nk=9945198c9bf7bec195176ee03bfdb1a8
