Minister Disagrees With Commission’s IDP Figure Of 600,000 In North-east: The Minister of Interior, Mr Abba Moro, has disagreed with the figures from the National Commission for Refugees, Migrant and Internally Displaced Persons which put the number of internally displaced persons in the North – East at over 600,000 as at July 2014 Mr Moro, in an exclusive interview with Channels Television, said the number of displaced persons could not be easily ascertained, as the persistent violence in the region had continued to affect lives on a daily basis. ”People are being displaced and resettled, so i think it will not be completely correct and wise to place our fingers on any number now, as the crisis in that part of the country is displacing people by the day and by the hour. So how convenient will it be for anyone to come forth with a figure as many as 600,000. He said the Federal Government was taking every necessary step to ensure that people, who are displaced, were sufficiently taken care of. The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons had raised alarm over the growing number of refugees and migrants. The Commission’s Federal Commissioner, Hadiza Kangiwa, said the Commission was collaborating with its partners to address the problem. ”The issue is overwhelming considering that the resources are not commiserate with the magnitude of the problem but we are trying to see how we can put our heads together to bring in more partners and come up with creative ways to address the problem” Kangiwa insisted that the Commission was not contending that the various states were dealing with the issues of migrants and displaced persons but was worried about how the Federal Government had managed the issue. Meanwhile, the Federal Commissioner had advocated that a posthumous award for humanitarian service should be given to the two nurses who died after contracting the Ebola virus from the index case in commemoration of the World Humanitarian Day.
