Minister Nantaba Pins Police for Fighting her Land Committee State Minister of Lands, Aida Nantaba, has today pinned and castigated police bosses including the Inspector General of Police for not supporting her committee to carry out its duties. While appearing before parliamentary committee on physical infrastructure, minister Nantaba said that instead of supporting her to fight against the rampant land grabbing in the country, police has continued to interfere with her committee work. The 32 year minister told legislators on the committee that, she was forced to suspend her committee operations due to the clash between police and her committee. “Police bosses have continued to interfere with the work of the committee by failing to execute decisions of the committee ” the minister said She also noted that the police boss (Kayihura) has forced the evictees to share land with people who grabbed this land adding that there is heavy deployment in Kayunga ‘especially in places where people were evicted. “If you read our report to President, you would find the basis of our clashes with police, normally when evictions take place, rich people use police to evict poor peasants, they bring police and beat up these people, imprison them, they take them to the state attorneys who sanction them to the DPP.” Said the minister “In the end, the person is evicted from his land and some of them are imprisoned and many times I have to go prisons all over the country to make sure that they are released” She added. “I have been to Mukono, Wakiso, Buikwe, Mpigi, Luwero and Kayunga and no eviction has ever happened without the hand of the Police involved in it .When I come in to condemn this, all blame games start that you don’t act within the confines of the law as if the grabbers act within the law” she testified.
