Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services The Honourable Tracy Davis Opportunity is knocking on International Women’s Day Queensland women are being urged to seize some of the amazing opportunities on offer around the state, this International Women’s Day. Communities Minister Tracy Davis said International Women’s Day on 8 March would embrace the ‘Opportunity is knocking’ theme by highlighting the wealth of options available to women in Queensland. “Queensland is a great state with great opportunities for all people and particularly for women,” Ms Davis said. “This is especially so as the Newman Government delivers on its election commitment to grow a four pillar economy based on tourism, agriculture, resources and construction. “Working and participating in these growth areas can provide very rewarding careers and experiences, along with valuable opportunities both personally and professionally.” Ms Davis said the Newman Government was generating opportunities in the resource sector for women through the Women in Resources Sector Strategy and Queensland’s Supporting Women Scholarships. “The resources sector has traditionally experienced difficulty in engaging and retaining female workers,” she said. “The previous Labor Government’s strategy to recruit women to these industries revolved around a flashy campaign, with pictures of women in hard hats. “In contrast, the Newman Government is growing Queensland’s four pillar economy to create real opportunities for women in this great state, and I encourage women to embrace these opportunities.” Ms Davis said the Newman Government was pleased to sponsor International Women’s Day events that promoted the achievements of women, including the Black, Bold and Beautiful Indigenous Women’s Luncheon and the UN Women’s breakfast. “These events are only two of the many important events being held across the state to mark International Women’s Day,” she said.
