Minister says peace impossible without resolving Kashmir issue ---------------- J&K Breaking News ---------------- ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Barjees Tahir said that durable peace in South Asia is impossible without resolving the Kashmir issue, which is the oldest one pending resolution at the United Nations. While briefing National Assembly Standing Committee on Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK, the minister warned that if the issue is not resolved according to the wishes of Kashmiris there are chances of eruption of another war between Pakistan and India, which had already fought two wars over Kashmir. He said it was the right of the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir (IOK) to decide about their own future. Tahir said Pakistan will continue in giving moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiri brothers. He said that according to UN resolution, IOK is a disputed area and Pakistan strongly condemns the brutalities carried out by 0.7 million Indian armed forces over there. “The government of Pakistan fully supports the right of self-determination of the people of IOK according to the UN resolution,” he said. About Million March in London, the minister said it was Kashmiris’ own initiative who wanted to raise the issue at an international forum. Briefing the committee, the minister said that during the current Indian firing on the line of control (LoC) three persons were martyred and fourteen were seriously injured in AJK only. Regarding damages caused by the current devastating floods in AJK, he said that about 56 persons died while 87 were injured; about 1,171 cattle perished; about 3,688 houses were fully destroyed; and about 78 water mills were destroyed. The financial impact of approximately Rs 2.38 billion has been caused in different sectors like housing, livestock, and infrastructure etc during the current floods. Tahir said the prime minister visited Azad Kashmir during the floods and announced a rehabilitation package including development of roads and other infrastructure. The PM also increased the financial assistance from Rs 50,000 to Rs1,000,000 for the persons died during the current floods. The PM also announced establishment of a motorway between Rawalpindi and Muzaffarabad and a Railway line to link Azad Kashmir with the Pak-China Economic Corridor. Moreover, the PM also promised the up-gradation of Tehsil Hospital Haveli into District Hospital and a road between Haveli and Rawalakot districts. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and State Disaster Manamement Authority (SDMA) also briefed the committee about the rehabilitation and rescue process of the organisations during and after the recent floods in AJK.
