Minister with responsibility for Foreign Affairs the Hon. Camillo Gonsalves has responded to persons questioning his constitutional qualification to be a senator in Parliament. In an open letter issued yesterday March 6th, Gonsalves made it known that he has been a Vincentian since birth despite the fact that he was born in the United States. He noted that the Constitution of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), granted him automatic citizenship at the moment of his birth, due to his father Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves being a Vincentian. He further said that while the fact of his birth in the United States did not disqualify him from being a senator in SVG, he renounced his American citizenship ahead of his appointment as a senator on September 16th 2013. Senator Gonsalves further disclosed that despite the fact that his foreign birth posed no legal impediment to his appointment and service as a Senator, he took a personal and private decision to renounce his United States citizenship; making it clear that he is not a citizen of the United States of America.
