Ministry of Health and Sanitation Ebola outbreak update: As of today, 25th July 2014, we have 116 cumulative number of survivors, 450 confirmed Ebola cases and 152 Ebola confirmed deaths. 73 patients are currently admitted at the Ebola treatment centers in Kenema and Kailahun. His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, today called an emergency DEPAC meeting of all development partners to discuss the current Ebola outbreak in the country and to present them his government’s new strategy to end the disease within the next 60 to 90 days. In that meeting, the President informed the partners of his government’s decision to intensify activities and interventions in containing the disease and stopping it spread. The President further informed partners a Presidential Taskforce that he has established to serve as an oversight for all Ebola implemented activities. The Taskforce, which will be chaired by him, will comprise all cabinet Ministers and key Stakeholders directly dealing with activities geared towards stopping the spread of the disease in the country. Also presented at the emergency DEPAC meeting is the revised Ebola Response plan, with gap analysis. This Plan is developed as a result of the July 2nd and 3rd, 2014 Accra Communique, which required all countries to develop Ebola response plans that will fit into the sub-regional plan of the Manor River Union countries (Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone) and the regional plan of ECOWAS countries. The country plan, developed by the EOC and with contribution from all partners once adopted will be officially launched by His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma in order to commence the implementation of the new strategy. Areas of focus for the new plan include contact tracing, surveillance, communications and social mobilization, psychosocial services, logistics and supplies. In their response to the President’s call for robust action to eradicate the Ebola disease, the development partners registered their continuous support towards the fight and thanked the President for his leadership. They further lauded the President for the formation of the Presidential Taskforce, which to them shows the President’s commitment and seriousness about ending the disease in the country The EOC wishes the general public and all partners working in the healthcare sector to know that Dr. Sheikh Umar Khan is still stable and responding well to treatment
