Ministry of communication technology presents Main Ones Tier III Data centre in Lagos. The Minister of Communication Technology, Dr Omobola Johnson today commissioned Main One’s Tier III Data center at Lekki. The $40 million 600 Rack Facility, designed to meet TIA 942 standards is the largest commercial Data Center in West Africa. The Data Center is a Tier III Certified by Uptime Institute, the global authority for Data Center Standards. This Certification implies minimum availability of 99.982% (maximum of 30 minutes downtime in a Year) MainOne, 80% owned Nigerian business, is one of the players in the implementation of Nigeria’s broadband policy and launched operations in 2010 (with the first privately owned open access subsea cable) and has continued to invest and innovate in the Nigerian Market. The Data Centre is an Open Access / Carrier Neutral Facility already interconnected with all major Telecom Operators and Internet Service Providers in Nigeria and Ghana The investment in Data Center infrastructure and services will further facilitate adoption of broadband solutions and promote local content in ICT within Nigeria. With the commissioning of the Data Center, Nigerian businesses are now further positioned to leapfrog into the advancements made in the Digital Age and compete effectively with global counterparts Dr Johnson at the commissioning, reiterated that government exited from ICT industry over a decade ago to pave the way for increased private sector participation in the industry. Government’s role thus became and remains the formulation and implementation of policy and the establishment of a predictable, consistent and stable regulatory environment that would drive competition, attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to support and sustain job and wealth creation. Dr Johnson stressed that the resulting telecommunications revolution and the estimated $ 30 billion in direct investments realized is testament to the success of the policy and the robustness of the associated regulatory environment. Dr Johnson disclosed that a review of the ICT sector conducted by the Ministry in 2011 revealed that there were relatively low levels of participation by local companies when compared to the size of the opportunities in the sector. This drove the decision to make the increased participation of local companies and domestic value-add a priority in the Ministrys policy formulation. Thus the Ministry of Communication Technology introduced Guidelines for Nigerian Content Development in ICT in December 2013 to support the realisation of Local Content Development policy thrust after a series of engagements and consultations with key stakeholders.
