Mission accomplished! What an interesting day! For over 15 years we have had a colony of bees living in an exterior wall of the cabin at The Bottoms. They didnt really bother anything, so we left them alone. Since we are going to put new siding on the cabin later this summer, as well as some other improvements, we decided they had to go. We engaged an expert bee keeper, who wanted them, to take them away. It is an interesting process. It was a record cold morning here this morning, so it was a perfect day for the project. First, as they became active and left their habitat inside the wall cavity, our guy...dressed in a protective suit...sucked them into specially vented buckets with a specially-rigged shop-vac. Next he started removing siding to get to the combs, which he carefully removed and placed in trays that slide into his wooden hives. The pissed-off bees that he did not get with the shop-vac swarmed in mass. Finally he located the queen, and carefully captured her and put her in a special collection trap. She puts off some kind of attractant and the rest of the bees will mostly all be in there by nightfall. Having done that, he proceeded to nail back the siding he had removed, and then head home with the captured bees. He will return after dark to retrieve the queen and the other bees she has attracted. He says the few he didnt get will disperse in the woods to look for another wild colony.
