You can also register as an individual or form another table. Part of a larger global mission, the Mission to Seafarers is a worldwide organization devoted to the welfare of merchant seafarers. The sign of the Flying Angel is known around the world for its promise of hospitality, justice and counsel. Seafarers play a vital role in our daily lives. We depend on them to bring us food, electronic items, raw materials, and other essential cargoes. In addition, we depend on them to ship our exports overseas. The crews on the commercial ships that call at the Port of Seattle come from many different countries, each with its own culture and religious beliefs. The Mission to Seafarers takes over 8,000 seafarers shopping and sightseeing. In addition, over 700 seafarers use our Center to relax, telephone or email their families in the few hours they have ashore. A job at sea can sound romantic and exciting. The reality is that it is the third most hazardous occupation, due to natural elements and piracy. The work takes seafarers away from their homes and families for months at a time. While at sea they are isolated and when in port, periods made ever briefer by more efficient cargo handling techniques, they often find themselves alienated by language and culture. The Homeland Security rules make shore leave in the United States difficult to obtain. The Seattle Seafarers Center is located at 3568 W.
