Mississippi Students are Getting Ready to Run! Every January, - TopicsExpress

Mississippi Students are Getting Ready to Run! Every January, thousands of runners gather to take part in the annual Mississippi Blues Marathon in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. In 2014, more than 1,200 kids also participated in the Mississippi Blues Marathon Kids One-Mile Fun Run, and organizers are anticipating a similar turnout in 2015! The Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run is an exciting opportunity to introduce kids to a road-racing event and encourage them to adopt the healthy habit of running. Its course is adjacent to the marathon start and finish area near the Mississippi Art Garden and Thalia Mara Hall in downtown Jackson. Sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, the race is geared toward promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for Mississippi’s youth. The 2015 event will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10 and the race is open to children ages 5 to 13. To keep the primary focus of the fun run on being active, and of course, having fun, the event will be timed, but no winners will be announced. All participants will receive a runner’s medal and event shirt. More information on the Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run is available at msbluesmarathon. Event organizers are seeking volunteer support for race day from parents, school faculty, local military, law enforcement personnel, businesses and community organizations. Volunteers are needed from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to assist with course safety, start and finish line support and general race support. Signing up to volunteer is fast and simple at msbluesmarathon/kidsvolunteer. Volunteers will each receive an official Kids’ Road Crew t-shirt and advance training in the days before the big event. The Mississippi Blues One-Mile Fun Run is also the culminating event for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi’s Get Ready to Run school program in central Mississippi. The Get Ready to Run program introduces students to the benefits of running, physical fitness and healthy lifestyle choices in a fun and rewarding way. The Get Ready to Run lessons and activities were developed by health and wellness experts at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Education and fully support the Mississippi Framework for Physical Education and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education standards. This year, 26 schools in the central Mississippi area are getting ready to run and competing to win up to $2,000. The top three Get Ready to Run schools with the highest percentage of participants in the Mississippi Blues Marathon Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run will win cash awards to support their P.E. programs. To build upon the success of the Get Ready to Run program in central Mississippi, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi will extend the program to elementary schools in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region during the spring of 2015! The Gulf Coast program will also culminate in a one-mile fun run and provide award money to the top three participating schools.
