Mitsi Andrews raised some good points about the realignment SPS is proposing to occur next year. I am an outsider now but I am close enough to the situation and believe there are many more issues that need to be addressed before the decision is final and put in place. Below are my initial thoughts. If any of my teacher friends would like to include other concerns, feel free to private message me and I will add them to this forum. SPS will be reducing elementary sites population by 17% while increasing SHS population by 33%. SMS and SJHS will maintain the same population. In addition to moving certified staff from SJHS to SHS, SHS will need more support staff to accommodate the additional 400 students. To accommodate the increase of SHS students there should be an increase of 33% in: * Support staff (Main Office, Guidance, custodial, cafeteria, Athletics, etc.) * Classroom, office, Library, and custodial supplies * Certified and support staff parking Other issues with increasing the certified staff by 33%: • Adequate classroom space. • Work room for teachers displaced during plan time because all rooms will be needed for classrooms. • Technology costs incurred for computers, shared printers, etc. Costs will be incurred for upgrading the cafeteria for 9th grade students who are less likely to leave campus to eat. Athletics facilities, equipment, and schedules will need to be adjusted to include the 9th grade athletes.
