Mixed emotions this evening, as Zvents, the local search engine for events and activities that I founded in 2005, has been shut down as a separate product by Stubhub which acquired it in 2011. Im incredibly proud of what the team accomplished over nearly 10 years, for our millions of users, our hundreds of publisher partners, and our hundreds of thousands of event promoters and advertisers. As a data-driven software product guy, Im also incredibly proud that some of the cool machine learning ranking we built back when that stuff was cutting edge is still running beautifully, long since anyone manned the command line. I recorded this Screenflow video to capture the site, for myself as much as for history -- its sadly behind the times now. It starts with a ~2010 promo video, then shows the core search functions on the site, then some of the click- and attention-driven ranking (of Halloween events -- always one of our best times of the year) and finally a few Quantcast traffic figures. RIP Zvents -- it was a good run.
