Mixed thoughts on the voting rights issue. In 1993 I ran for the US Congress in the WHITE 2nd district in NC. "White?" you ask? Yes it was! Due to the Supreme court, two "BLACK" districts had been drawn -- one for Rep. Mel Watt and one for Rep. Eva Clayton. So I ran for Congress in a strange snake like shaped district where the centers of every town in "my" district were in either the Watt or Clayton district. It could take 5 hours to go across the district, but parts of it were not even as wide as a car. It was crazy. And of course the district, which had always been Democratic for decades before, went Republican.
