Mobilians: Went to the new Bistro Escoffier last night. It was wonderful in atmosphere, nicely-dressed clientele, and most of all food. The chef, Lee Thompson, was a chef at the old Quattors downtown, which was my favorite restaurant in Mobile. He doesnt disappoint this time, either. The service was pretty good, with a few needing attention, but I expect that they are observant and will fix these. Another pleasant surprise: Devlin Wilson, an old friend some of you may know, has done the mural and all the paintings on the walls, where he strikes exactly the right note for the decor. An interesting note: The chef is distantly related to the original August Escoffier. Chef Thompsons grandfather was one of the New Orleans Escoffiers who moved to Mobile. The New Orleans Escoffiers, in turn, were from an Escoffier, a descendant of August, who had moved to the New World.
