Model Mayhem posted a blog post on how to avoid scams, which is good because MM is full of scammers. Its a fairly useful read, and you dont need to be a member of MM to view it. The most important piece of advice it has is the adage If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. There are very few big name companies that seek out models from MM or any other modeling site. That is the biggest trick they use, claiming to be with a major magazine or cosmetic company. Always be very, very careful, and if youre ever not sure about a potential job, feel free to talk with me or any experienced photographer you trust.
