Models of Communication Linear Model- It is a one way model to communicate with others. It consists of the sender encoding a message and channeling it to the receiver in the presence of noise. Draw backs – the linear model assumes that there is a clear cut beginning and end to communication. It also displays no feedback from the receiver. Interactive Model- The main flaw in the linear model is that it depicts communication asa one-way process where speakers only speak and never listen. It also implies that listeners listen and never speak or send messages. Schramm (1955) in Wood (2009) came out with a more interactive model that saw the receiver or listener providing feedback to the sender or speaker. The speaker or sender of the message also listens to the feedback given by the receiver or listener. Both the speaker and the listener take turns to speak and listen to each other. Feedback is given either verbally or non-verbally, or in both ways. This model also indicates that the speaker and listener communicate better if they have common fields of experience, or fields which overlap Transactional Model- The transactional model shows that the elements in communication are interdependent. Each person in the communication act is both a speaker and a listener, and can be simultaneously sending and receiving messages. There are three implications in the transactional model: “Transactional” means that communication is an ongoing and continuously changing process. You are changing, the people with whom you arecommunicatingare changing, and your environment is also continually changing as well. In any transactional process, each element exists in relation to all the other elements. There is this interdependence where there can be no source without a receiver and no message without a source. Each person in the communication process reacts depending on factors such as their background, prior experiences, attitudes, cultural beliefs and self-esteem. Schramm and Osgood model-This model breaks the sender and receiver model it seems communication in a practical way. It is not a traditional model. It can happen within our self or two people; each person acts as both sender and receiver and hence use interpretation. It is simultaneously take place e.g. encoding, interpret and decoding. Semantic noise is a concept introduced here it occurs when sender and receiver apply different meaning to the same message. It happens mostly because of words and phrases for e.g. Technical Language, So certain words and phrases will cause you to deviate from the actual meaning of the communication. Aristotle’s Model- Aristotle, a great philosopher initiative the earliest mass communication model called “Aristotle’s Model of Communication”. He proposed model before 300 B.C who found the importance of audience role in communication chain in his communication model. This model is more focused on public speaking than interpersonal communication. Aristotle Model of Communication is formed with 5 basic elements (i) Speaker, (ii) Speech, (iii) Occasion, (iv) Audience and (v) Effect. Berlo’s Model- takes into account the emotional aspect of the message. Berlo’s model of communication operates on the SMCR model. In the SMCR model S - Stands for Source M - Message C - Channel R – Receiver Lasswell’s Model- This model say about communication process and its function to society. Lasswell said 3 function of communication. The first one is an environmental monitoring, then a relation from every departed society which gives a response to environment. And the last one is a social transmission from one generation to the other. This model is often used in mass communication. Who to gate keeper, says what a source to analyze about the message is. In which channel to media: to whom to audience.
