Modern Musical Month #69 Martin Scorsese: NEW YORK, NEW YORK - TopicsExpress

Modern Musical Month #69 Martin Scorsese: NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977) Directors 156m. extended cut. Robert De Niro, Liza Minnelli, Lionel Stander. The music is mainly big band jazz fronted by female vocalists, but also depicting jazz transit into be-bop. Original music is written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, who also made music for CABARET (1972). Musicians Georgie Auld, Clarence Clemons, and Diahnne Abbott appears in minor roles. In the booklet from the DVD the tone of the film is described as: Contrasting the emotional darkness of film noir storytelling against a colourful, splashy production design inspired by classic MGM musicals, which is a much better desciption than anything I could think up myself. The film streams faultlessly forward, and I believe the film captures the essence of the post WW2 forties- and fifties jazz sub-culture in a remarkable way. Both Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli are no less than EXCELLENT in their roles. Liza Minnellis rendering of the title song, and her performance as singer Francine Evans in the in-film-musical Happy Endings are two of many peaks. Have had the DVD long before finally watching this, thanks to Modern Musical Month. This one will certainly be re-watched by me in the future. facebook/martin.andersson.399041/posts/837241126292690?stream_ref=10
