Modern psychology is still in an evolving state; it is not a finished product as yet. Counselors and therapists play an important role in society, but many of them lack the depth and insight to adequately analyze and advise their patients. They lack self-confidence and are insecure. Because of that, the counselor is unable to guide the client effectively toward the resolution of his problems. Counseling is a very noble profession, but it is taken too lightly. It is often practiced by erratic and egotistical people who are not interested in developing themselves but who are only interested in teaching. The same problem exists with those modern gurus who can theoretically explain but do not ever practice. Therapists and gurus can be more dangerous than anyone else when they exploit the innocence of others. We must find a way to keep this noble heritage and this wonderful profession from degeneration. It is through sadhana (spiritual practice) alone that one can come in touch with his inner Self. Without that, trying to help others is like building a castle in the sand: it will crumble in the first shower. ~Swami Rama
