Molly and I got married on Saturday, February 23, 2002. It was a lovely day and a beautiful wedding. It came together in classic Dave and Molly fashion. Molly wanted what she wanted - a traditional ceremony in a beautiful setting, a multi-course vegan feast, an exquisite wedding cake, lovely floral arrangements and a romantic honeymoon in San Francisco and the wine country. There was just one hitch - our budget was $5,000. Most people would have looked at the situation and decided it was impossible. Not Molly. She put together her plan and went about working her magic. The key was her tenacity - and the fact that she and I did just about everything ourselves. ***Molly designed the invitations, direction cards and dinner menus herself. They were all beautifully and tastefully done. Then she had them printed and we stuffed and stamped envelopes and sent them out. ***She spent days searching for a beautiful yet inexpensive location (that was also available on short notice). She settled on the Japanese Garden next to Lake Balboa. I think it cost $500 for the afternoon. You should visit sometime - it is breathtaking. My father, a retired Lutheran minister, performed the ceremony. ***She went to her favorite florist and haggled and worked some sort of trade-out and was able to get the flowers she wanted for only a few hundred dollars. ***At the time, I was the Executive Chef at Real Food Daily and she was the Manager. They supplied the ingredients for the wedding cake provided they got the recipe when it was done. I made the cake myself on my off-time from work. I stayed up until 3:00am the night before the wedding frosting and decorating the cake while Molly kept me company - she was quite stressed, as you might imagine. ***The produce purveyor for RFD provided the ingredients for the dinner. My kitchen managers at RFD volunteered their time to prepare the food. Molly rented tables and linens for 60 people. We cleared out the living room and dining room of our house and set up a temporary restaurant. On the night of the reception, my RFD compadres and I cooked a four-course dinner for 60 that Molly served single-handedly. ***The day after the wedding we drove up to San Francisco. We spent an incredible week staying in boutique hotels, eating yummy vegan food, tasting wine and basking in each others company. I think we used some of the wedding gift money on the honeymoon and ended up doing the whole thing for around $6,000. Molly was the planner, architect, co-executor and impetus of the entire thing. During the month that we put it together, she was a force of nature. Nothing could have stopped her from getting the wedding she wanted. And although I thought it was crazy at the time, afterwards I understood. We had created a memory that we would always treasure. Thank you honey...
